I really needed to hear this. Hearing that 90% of the work you make give away is for free is outstanding. I think so many artists need to hear this because of scarcity mind set. When we stay creating there is always so much more to come ❤️🔥
Thanks so much for listening ‘bones! Yeah I’m writing about it atm, there’s an energy to it that brings in so much but that scarcity stops people from giving
I saved this to listen to because I knew it would be amazing and it didn't disappoint. Thank you for having this honest conversation. Four years ago I stopped trying to balance regular jobs with creative work and went 100% self-employed as a musician. It has been challenging and I've had to make financial sacrifices but it is 100% worth it. Everything I do now is in some way creative and meaningful, even the gigs I take to pay rent. Now I have time to create original work without being exhausted. Amie's work, along with a few others, have been a huge inspiration for learning to promote myself better - this is the next frontier for me. Amie is right - we already have a lot of skills we don't realise. So thanks for talking about that aspect of things too. Excellent podcast!
Thanks so much Sarah. I love to hear that you're living a creative life. You're right, it's hard but so worth it. There are a bunch more Creative Rebels episodes that you might enjoy, so hopefully we can gain you as a subscriber and part of the rebel army :)
What a great conversation. Thank you so much for bringing so much passion and conviction (and cursing!) to this topic. I pre-ordered Amie's book, and also snagged the audio version. After listening to this podcast, I'm moving We Need Your Art to the top of the TBR list.
So much of what you said resonated deeply. In fact, this morning - before I'd stumbled across this post - I dictated the following into my Notes app while out with one of my dog-walking clients: "Art is not the end. It is the means to an end. It is simply a way to start the conversation. The art is never the thing. It may be a reflection of life, but it doesn’t contain life. It is the interaction between artist and viewer and between viewers that brings everything to life. Art is about belonging - community connection, acceptance, even friendship."
I've been doing freelance writing for the better part of two decades - not the "fun" kind, but the down-and-dirty, marketing-and-communications, no-byline kind of corporate writing that is as soul sucking as the next purposeless j.o.b. Over the past 6 to 12 months (yes, it has really been that damn fast), I've watched AI pick off my clients one by one. Most of them don't even have the courage (or the courtesy) to tell me they are jumping on the robot-writer bandwagon. They just ghost me. Others are so incredibly tone deaf to my position that they will actually use AI to rewrite my work and send it back to me with cheerful notes about how they have improved it.
All this to say that I am teetering on the brink of once again having to reinvent myself, and - while I know that I will probably have to tackle a variety of jobs to bridge the gap - I'm determined that this time I'll make the leap to prioritizing my own creative work (even if I'm still figuring out what that is exactly).
Thank you for all your encouragement and inspiration. Thank you for speaking truth about the utter condescension that drips off the advice of well-meaning (but, again, perhaps a little tone deaf) people like Rick Rubin and Elizabeth Gilbert. (All hail and whatnot.) And thank you for giving me hope that there will one day be a whiplash effect in response to the AI takeover that will make human-made art more desirable and valuable.
Oh damn Jamie, thanks so much for your thoughtful reply and thanks so much for listening. You have made my Sunday.
I hope never to become an out of touch ’guru’ but is it somewhat inevitable? Idk. I guess we just have to say what we know and listen as much as we can.
I love that you’re making the shift. See where it takes you. It will be worth it. Glad to have you on board - and please consider supporting the show if you’re able 🙏
I am happy to support the show and the Substack with attention and sharing. And when I get back on my feet work-wise, I'd be delighted to support financially as well. Good luck on your journey!

I’m only half way through and absolutely loving this. Particularly hearing you both speak so honestly. It’s refreshing.

I will definitely listen again. With a notebook.

Legend. Hope the show continues to help 😊😊
